I’m a retired public school Visual Arts Educator still teaching art in adult Ed classes. You came up in my feed so I listened. It got you a new subscriber. This particular subject is enormous. The administration is going after the arts because they know how important they are even though they likely have zero idea why. I’m positive of this because I spent 37 years trying to get administrators to understand what value they provide.

School systems including colleges often cut the arts first and even when a school does have an arts program, there exists a hierarchy that places music (especially instrumental) at the top, then visual, then theatre then dance. In fact, most schools do not have a dance program.

Maxwell was extremely interesting to listen to. Intelligent, organized, fully aware, engaged and brave. This particular topic has enormous implications. The arts are a direct connection to culture, history, science etc everything! They are a powerful motivator. When their collective impact is measured it is usually only the $$$ part that matters. Of course that’s because this country has an outsized adoration of it. The arts true value is much larger than $. It’s harder to measure. It shows up in the background of people like Maxwell. Scratch the surface of any bright, successful human being and more often than not the arts have played a big role in the making of who they are.
