Five Obsessions (July 2025)
Five Obsessions covers five of my favorite songs or albums each month. Some new, some old. Some new to me, some revisited. Published in the middle of every month (typically on the second Saturday).
You can listen to the running list of Applied Science favorites in the Spotify playlist below and read about this week’s specific picks below that.
George Riley, Mura Masa - “Forever”
The past echoes in every future.
Ethel - “Availability”
Sunmer jam of the roller rink in my mind.
Tri Nohbi, Valee - “if it did happen”
A miniature ship inside a full bottle of gin.
$avvy - “PEACE-PIECE” (though all of his album AIR GUITAR deserves a listen)
A fitting entry with the talk of synthesizers around here this week. $avvy blends up a lot of influences with personal flare.
Matthew Herbert, Momoko Gill - “Mowing”
Good bad vibes.

Bonus #2: Clipse - “So Be It”
Gonna be hard to imagine another rap song I listen to more in 2025.
Bonus #3: Raekwon - “baggin crack”
While Clipse deservedly monopolizes the cocaine raps this week, this ‘09 favorite got stuck in my head. Towards the end of one lithe, all-too-brief serpent of a verse, Raekwon achieves a rare of a rhythmic-syllabic momentum that hypnotizes me each time I run it back.
